Private Members' Bills
MPs are allowed to bring their own Bills to
the House of Commons for debate. These can possibly be turned into law if the House votes
in favour but often many Bills do not get to this stage because of a lack of parliamentary
time. A lottery at the beginning of every parliamentary session decides which MPs go to
the front of the queue so they can be guaranteed time for their Bill to be debated.
Since becoming an MP in 1992, I have never been drawn in the ballot and so I have only
ever tabled one Private Members' Bill, which is listed below.
