During
a meeting of the Parliamentary Forum on Transsexualism, Simon Hughes MP (North Southwark
and Bermondsey) explained that he had been approached to seek an amendment in the law to
the benefit of UK citizens who currently lack social representation because of inability
to identify as male or female.
He explained the following which I have
agreed to put up on my website as the Chair of the Parliamentary Forum:
A gendered role is demanded for purposes
of official documentation (e.g. passport, most types of insurance etc.) and the
non-gendered citizen if forced to accept such categorisation even when known to be
inappropriate and non-gendered other people remain unidentified both within the perimeters
of government legislation and throughout the mainstream of society.
A societal assumption of gender ensures
social invisibility without gendered identification.
The change in the law proposed by Simon
Hughes MP will allow for provision of a non-gendered/gender-unspecified option on official
documentation for the purposes of identification for citizens or other people who do not
identify as belonging of the male or female gendered roles.
The office of Simon Hughes MP would like
to hear from those who would utilize the legislation if granted, and wish to register as
non-gendered/non-gender-specific on official documentation if the option were available in
the United Kingdom. Please contact Simon Hughes MP at simon@simonhughes.org.uk.
This potentially ground breaking move away
from the imposition of inappropriate gendered categorisation deserves full support.
