It has been a privilege to serve as the MP for
Selly Oak since 1992. Three years ago, I announced I would
not be standing again. So, for the first time in many years, I will not be able
to vote for myself as the Parliamentary Candidate. If
I were standing, I would be signing up to the Equality
Pledge and if you share my political views, you might like to ask your
parliamentary candidates for their views on the Pledge.
I also recommend the book The
Spirit Level, which explains how more equal societies do better on all measures of
well-being.

When the news broke on 19 January
that the Board of Cadbury had unanimously recommended that shareholders accept Kraft's
revised takeover bid, I immediately |
applied to the Speaker
for an Urgent Question to be taken in the House of Commonsthat afternoon. This was turned
down but I was subsequently granted a half hour adjournment debate on Tuesday 26 January
at the end of the day's business in the Main Chamber. Click here
to read the debate. For more on my reaction to the Board's recommendation, click here. On 19 January, I also wrote the following article
